IC&G

In the fall of 2011, CTC&G completed the redecoration of the 100-year-old Connecticut Governor’s Residence in Hartford. Seventeen public spaces were decorated and furnished by the area’s best designers and manufacturers at no cost to the taxpayer (Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, November 2011). We called it The People’s Project. ■ It was a job that needed to be done. And all around Connecticut, there are many jobs that need to be done. With that in mind, CTC&G will bring its considerable “voice” to highlight the fundraising and support needed by iconic structures and gardens within our state. The program will be called Iconic Cottages & Gardens (icandg.com). ■ The first iconic structure to benefit from this program is the beautiful Victorian-era Lockwood- Mathews Mansion Museum. Completed in 1868, the home of the Lockwoods and the Mathews was leased to the City of Norwalk in 1939. First used as emergency wartime offices and then for the storage of heavy equipment, the mansion then endured the auction of its furnishings in 1944. In 1961, the city announced plans to demolish the building. Only the efforts of wonderful volunteers saved and restored much of the mansion. But much more still needs to be done. ■ “Expanding this program will help revitalize Connecticut’s iconic homes and landmark buildings, and highlight the tremendous talent we have right here in Connecticut,” said Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy. “I thank the artists, designers and suppliers who donate their time and expertise to restore local history.” ■ Building on the Governor’s words, we would be delighted to hear from designers and manufacturers who are interested in supporting this wonderful cause with their time and expertise.
