Birds of a Feather

Every year we conduct reader surveys

to answer the question, “Who are you?” Marianne Howaston, CEO Letter SFCandG We pinpoint your behavior to get abetter idea of who you are, what you’re doing, and what you’re about to do. This information helps us stay on track, enabling us to provide you with the best design content available in a highly competitive market. The results are in from our latest survey, which shows that a whopping 83 percent of you are planning to renovate this year, while 66 percent of you will use design professionals (who make up 35 percent of our readership) to help you do so.

In January, as I walked the halls of Maison & Objet, the huge biannual design fair in Paris, I realized that the world is our oyster: The same obsession with the latest and greatest in decorative accessories and home furnishings is just as deeply felt overseas as it is here. And if you weren’t there to see it in person, see what we discovered at the fair in our special report on our new website channel C&G TV (cottagesgardens.com/cgtv).

So what else do we know about you? While your average household income has increased by 10 percent, to a little more than $1.47 million, and your average net worth by 9 percent, the average value of your primary residence has increased by 20 percent—no doubt keeping pace with New York’s skyrocketing real estate values. Half of you own two or more homes, and most of you are planning to renovate bathrooms, gardens, living rooms, kitchens, and master bedrooms—in that order. (This is the first year in the history of our survey that bathrooms and gardens have topped our renovating hit list.)
