An American in . . . Milan

Kohler’s Real Rain experience dazzled spectators at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan.

Marianne Howaston, CEO Letter SFCandGFor those of you who love design, I heartily recommend a trip to the Salone del Mobile, the cutting-edge home furnishings fair that takes place in Milan every April. The city is chock-full of exhibitions featuring collaborations between furniture manufacturers and today’s greatest designers, displayed against the backdrop of Milan’s most historic buildings.

One evening, we were delighted to be invited by the U.S. bath and kitchen company Kohler to celebrate the launch of its new Real Rain showering panel at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi. The firm collaborated with Milan-based landscape architect Derek Castiglioni, who fashioned a Real Rain experience on the museum’s loggia, where raindrops fell softly from a columned structure dressed in greenery. Originally the home of two brothers, the barons Fausto and Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi, the museum is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and, quite fittingly for this occasion, also boasts the first-ever shower in the city of Milan. Next year’s Salone del Mobile will showcase the latest in kitchens at EuroCucina, and I can’t wait to see what our favorite design firms will be cooking up. See you there!
