Well-Traveled

Everyone I know has been traveling this year—and the destinations run the gamut from Holland to China and Nevis to Florida. I am not sure what has prompted this sudden wanderlust, but our recent travel survey confirms that this is not a phenomenon limited to my circle of friends. ■ Recently, we asked you, dear readers, what vacations you are planning. Turns out that more than half of you are not stopping at just one! A healthy 96 percent of you are planning warm-weather destination vacations at full-service resorts, preferably in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Florida, the Bahamas and California. And the newest trend we are seeing is that 35 percent of you are looking at private home rentals. ■ You told us that the top five characteristics of an excellent travel experience include relaxation, fine dining and cuisine, beach amenities (such as cabana services), pleasant and accommodating staff and yes, a great pool. ■ All this talk of travel brings to mind the great trip that we offer at our Innovation in Design Awards every year. This year the IDAs will take place in the Garden Pavilion at the Stamford Hilton on May 22. I think of it as the academy awards of design. The academy is our panel of judges (Anthony Baratta, Stephen Elrod, Adam Hopfner, Frances Palmer, Ashley Stark and Matthew Patrick Smyth) who vote on the entries. Twenty-five finalists will be presented that night in five categories and the winners announced to much cheering and applause. A special builder recognition award will debut at this year’s event. And the recipient of our Innovator Award is the fabulous Alexa Hampton. ■ Back to the trip: Our raffle prize is four nights in London. Can you see yourself in London this year? Why not? And you would be helping the Neighborhood Housing Services affiliated with the Yale School of Architecture, who will receive the entire proceeds of the raffle. ■ See you at the IDAs.
